Rose above the cultural stereotypes
Mary Lou Williams worked against the patriarchal system by never ceasing to excel and create during her career. She was able to live and operate as a strong woman in a man’s world where race and gender combined to make life difficult for her. According to Mary’s Documentary collection, her former husband, John Williams related the account of when he first
encountered Mary at the piano and his preconceived notions of having a woman play with the band. He reported being “disgusted” and truly believed that “women really couldn’t handle it at the time” (Documentary Collection np). He was surprised by Mary’s skill, and said that she “outplayed any piano player” he’d ever played with (Documentary Collection np). Even though Mary Lou claimed in her interview with D. Antoinette Handy that she never had problems with being a woman musician (Handy 203). This was not completely true because according to Linda Dahl, “some musicians refused to play with her, and many men would stereotype her before hearing her play and believe that she is an inadequate player simply because she was a woman” (Dahl 50).
